Coaching Courses

Development Index

Details of a variety of Coaching Courses follow. For more information or to join a course please contact Bob Leeds (0207 359 3667) at the Amateur Football Alliance.

AFA Courses The Coaching Ladder (FA/UEFA)
Emergency Aid Child Protection

Adult Coaching Course

The Adult Coaching Course is an informal course, normally lasting for two evenings and one Sunday morning (2 x 3 hours, 1 x 4 hours). This is a course aimed at "a club captain/manager who wants to get a handle on the basics of coaching". Attendees must be aged sixteen or over.

FA Coaching - Level 1 Certificate

Awarded in partnership with the FA, the Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Football (L1CCF) is the first rung on the formal coaching ladder. This vocationally related qualification provides you with an opportunity to study and be assessed in both practical and theoretical aspects of coaching football.  The certificate qualifies you to coach grassroots club teams for children aged between 6 and 16 approximately.

There are no pre-requisites to join this course. The course normally takes three days (3 x 8 hours) plus the Child Protection and Emergency Aid courses and is normally run over three consecutive Sundays - although it's primarily targeted at youth football, it is the first step on the UEFA coaching ladder. The Child Protection and Emergency Aid Courses outlined above are also required. Attendees must be aged sixteen or over.

The course will enable you to gain knowledge to develop a basic understanding of safe, ethical and effective football coaching to young people. The qualification is a stepping stone to other vocationally related areas including coaching, officiating and sports therapy.  You will learn how to:

bulletSafely organise and supervise football activities including Mini Soccer, Small Sided and Conditioned Games
bulletPromote and establish working relationships and high standards between players, coaches, parents and officials
bulletUnderstand different aspects of coaching children
bulletIdentify and adapt football activities and sessions for a variety of different age groups
bulletIdentify personal development opportunities in football including sports therapy, administration and officiating
bulletChild Protection
bulletEmergency First Aid

The assessment of the L1CCF is divided into two parts:

bulletThe internal assessment is conducted by your tutor during the course and will include both oral and written projects, assignments and assessments of your practical coaching.  You will receive plenty of feedback during the course, this will prepare you for the next part.
bulletThe external assessment is conducted by an assessor who has had no input into your training and will be based on your delivery of a 20 minute practical coaching session on a topic from the Level 1 Football Practical Syllabus.

FA Coaching - Level 2 Certificate

Awarded in partnership with the FA, the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football (L2CCF) is the next progression on the coaching ladder.  The qualification offers candidates a combination of practical experience and class-based theory, to develop an understanding of the planning, conducting and evaluation of ethical football coaching sessions.

There are no pre-requisites to join the course but it is generally recommended to have taken the Level 1 Certificate first or to have several seasons' experience of coaching already. Students are also required to attend a Child Protection Workshop before their final assessment.  Emergency Aid and Laws of the Game Workshops are included in the course. The course is held over a six day period (Monday to Saturday) and participants will then have to complete various tasks and return for final assessment approximately six months later. The total contact hours are 90 which include two support session days before final assessment. Attendees must be aged sixteen or over.

It is a commitment, but one well worth making.

On the course you will gain knowledge in the following areas:

bulletAttitude and Ethics
bulletLearning Strategies and Coaching Styles
bulletPlanning, preparing and evaluating coaching sessions
bulletFootball Fitness
bulletOveruse Injuries
bulletChild Protection
bulletGrowing up - young people in football
bulletFootball Food
bulletSkill and Techniques from the Technical Syllabus

The assessment of the L2CCF is divided into two parts:

bulletThe internal assessment is conducted by your tutor during the course and will include delivery of three short coaching sessions and the completion of various tasks.  You will receive plenty of feedback during the course, this will prepare you for the next part.
bulletThe external assessment is conducted by an assessor who has had no input into your training.  This will include the delivery of two planned coaching sessions, one a technical practice, the other small-sided game - 6 v 6 (each lasting 20 minutes) and checking that all post course tasks have been completed.  A short, individual oral interview will also be held.

UEFA Coaching Licences (Levels 3 and 4)

Beyond Level 2 there is the UEFA "B" Licence (Level 3) and the UEFA "A" Licence (Level 4). Click here for more details.
